Karen Muntean is a multidisciplinary artist who grew up in the United States and immigrated to Canada as a young adult. After working in graphic design, she relocated to a rural area in British Columbia, where she began to devote herself more fully to painting. Her artistic journey has included explorations in watercolor, encaustic, and acrylic painting, as well as printmaking techniques such as etching, monoprinting, and linocut.
Her work evolved from stylized realism into a more expressionistic language, and most recently into geometric abstraction. Color remains the central element of her expression, complemented by a strong emphasis on shape and texture. Her latest body of work, titled Lexicon, explores abstract visual language—defined as a collection of lexemes, or units of meaning—inviting viewers to interpret significance for themselves.
